Let’s talk baby shower gifts. Onesies for days! Blankies and stuffies too! Seriously, there’s no end to the number of these things a new mom gets for her babe at the baby shower. And while they’re totally appreciated for sure, sometimes it’s nice to get the new family something useful and helpful – that’s also still reasonably priced.
I have compiled a quick list of my top 5 items that I either wished someone gave me or that I loved receiving. They require a bit of ‘outside the box’ thinking and some creativity in how you present the gift so you don’t look like a complete moron who just stopped at 7-11 on your way to the shower to buy a nonsense gift. Sharing a personal story or anecdote about why you’re including the item in your gift is something I’d recommend.
Without further ado, here’s my list of the essential (and ingenious) baby gifts that no one else will think to give. Trust me, the parents will love you.
It should be a rule that if you buy a gift that requires batteries, you should also include a pack of the appropriate number and type of batteries too. That just goes without saying. But even if you’re giving a cute onesie and a pack of diapers, you should totally throw in a package of batteries too. It’s like every single baby-related item requires them, and they do not last! Trust me on this. No new mother or father wants to be running out to Walmart at 9:30 pm in -40°C weather to search for the batteries needed to work the magical swing that is the only thing that will calm the baby down. Even if, at first glance, the mom-to-be isn’t sure about the gift you’ve given her at her baby shower, she will appreciate it in the coming weeks. I said it before. I’ll say it again. Just trust me. Get them batteries.
Give the gift of music with an iTunes gift card. It may seem like a generic gift that doesn’t require a lot of thought but it’s actually a very thoughtful gift. Music is an amazing baby soother. So is white noise. There are apps for white noise and all kinds of lullabies on iTunes. Make it a personal gift by sharing in the card an anecdote about how your baby loved a certain white noise app, or give the new mom a couple of your tried and true lullaby favs.
Our Favs: Any of the Rockabye Baby albums are a hit with Jonas. We enjoy them too because we recognize the tunes from our favorite bands too.
Top tip: Make a mixtape for baby if an iTunes gift card isn’t for you (or perhaps not the parents’ style). You can give a CD or a USB drive filled with your favorites, and don’t forget to add your own personal flair.
One of the sweetest gifts I ever received was a bag (and then later a whole container) full of these amazing energy balls. They had healthy ingredients and were so tasty. For a new mom, who is running on nearly zero sleep, who has barely the time to go to the bathroom, a healthy easy-to-grab and even-easier-to-eat snack is essential, and was very much appreciated. I would grab one or two of these before a late-night feeding to give me the boost I needed to stay awake while Jonas ate. So, whether it’s a homemade batch of healthy granola bars or a store-bought box, it will almost always get put to good use. Just make sure of any allergies beforehand.
Top tip: If it’s a homemade treat, include the recipe! Chances are if it was a hit, they’ll want to make more once they have a bit more time.
Breastfeeding mamas need to stay hydrated. It’s a fact. One of the best investments I made was buying another 3-pack of these water bottles (similar style) from Costco just before Jonas was born. If I would have received them as a gift I would have kissed the giver. I have bottles strewn about the house all day long, which probably drives Levi nuts, but at least I’m hydrated! These bottles don’t leak thanks to a locking mechanism on the spout. If you’re anything like me and prefer your water nice and cold, you need to have a stash of bottles to rotate through the fridge and so that you’ll always have at least one or two chilled and ready to go while the rest are being washed.
Top tip: This is another one that the guests at the baby shower might think is a bit odd. I suggest you include a little note in the card about why you’re gifting some cute reusable water bottles and it’ll all make sense to mom and company.
Don’t start yelling at me yet. I promise I’m not advocating drinking alcohol while breastfeeding and I’m certainly not saying drink a whole bottle (or five) if you do decide you want a glass of wine. That’s your decision and I’ll let you do the research to decide what’s right for you. But let me tell you something, getting a bottle of wine at a baby shower was probably one of my most favorite gifts. Even though I have yet to crack it open, I am looking forward to it very much. I realize that this might not be the perfect gift for everyone but you’ll be surprised at how many people really do love receiving it – and how many guests at the shower will think you’re a genius too.
Top tip: If you’re into making your own wine at home, why not share a bottle with the new family for a nice extra personal touch.
Okay, there you have it. My list of unexpected but appreciated baby shower gifts. What is your favorite unexpected shower gift to give or receive?
