These Things I Love presents Noshing on Nostalgia – The Series!
I have some really cool vintage and not-so-vintage cookbooks in my collection that have the recipes I remember from my youth. Perusing these cookbooks and seeing all my mom’s old handwritten notes has given me the idea to work through some of the more classic recipes and re-invent them to be gluten-free. I haven’t decided yet, but I think it’d be fun to film my making these recipes in a completely authentic and non-scripted way. I’m sort of over the whole strive-for-perfection thing.

You’ll follow me (and likely my little sous chef, Jonas) as I try to decipher some handwritten recipes with very few instructions and turn it into an edible masterpiece for today’s generation. My plan of attack is to tackle the recipes that I can remember enjoying and make them gluten-free. These are probably mostly desserts and treats, if I’m being honest. Then I’ll try to recreate some of my favourite supper meals. I might even attempt to make some of the recipes I hated from my childhood. I’m looking at you, Salmon Loaf with Boiled Egg Sauce. (I can’t even make that up!) For comedic results, of course.
Many of my mom’s go-to recipes growing up came from the Company’s Coming cookbook collection she had. She had every single cookbook at one point and then over the years as she’s cooked and baked less she’s given them away and kept a few. When she moved in with us I couldn’t decide if we should get rid of them or not because truthfully, the internet is my go-to recipe source, but once I saw the handwritten notes and clipped out recipes from newspapers, I had to keep them.
I’ll also be using some recipes from the handwritten cookbook my mother-in-law gave me after we got married filled with some of Levi’s family’s classic recipes. I’ve made the Dream Squares from that book and posted it here.
And lastly, I plan on going through the Marysville School Cookbook from my youth to also find some gems to recreate.
Noshing on Nostalgia is an idea that actually makes me want to blog again and I’m so excited about it. I hope you are too because with this series you can expect to see much more from me in 2021.
